Lower McDowell Creek Road Findings

Intern Katie Jones and Dr. Morgan walk toward the Edwards barn on Lower McDowell Creek Road in Geary County. Katie is researching early Welsh settlement in the area. The Edwards family were stonemasons who built the barn, a small stone farmhouse, and the striking stone wall pictured here. They may also have constructed some of the original Fort Riley buildings.

Also pictured (below) is senior history major Tyler Rudder and Dr. Morgan standing outside
the old St. Joseph’s Church on Lower McDowell Creek Road. Tyler is researching
the history of the church. He’s putting up his hood because it was only 24 degrees despite the bright sun! The early gravestones in this cemetery are inscribed with the names of the counties in Ireland remembered as home by the Irish who settled here in the 1870s.
